Non-Surgical Root Canal

Non-Surgical Root Canal FAQ

  • A root canal is a common dental procedure, with over 14 million performed annually. It is an effective way to save natural teeth and avoid the need for dental implants or bridges.

Inside each tooth is a substance known as pulp, which consists of blood vessels that help support the tooth's growth. The pulp can become infected due to various reasons such as trauma, deep decay, cracks or chips, or multiple dental procedures. Signs of an infection may include visible damage or swelling, sensitivity to hot or cold, and pain in the tooth or gums.

  • If you are experiencing symptoms of an infected pulp, your dentist may recommend non-surgical root canal therapy. During this procedure, the infected pulp is removed, and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Local anesthesia is typically used, and the procedure may take one or more visits depending on the complexity of the case. Success rates for this treatment are approximately 90%. If your tooth is unsuitable for endodontic treatment or if there are complications, your dentist will inform you either during the consultation or during the procedure.

Local anesthesia ensures the process is pain-free, and nitrous oxide may be offered for added comfort if needed. You can drive yourself home afterward and resume your usual activities soon after.

    • Once your root canal therapy is completed, the details will be shared with your regular dentist. It’s important to schedule a follow-up appointment with them within a few weeks to determine the best type of restoration for your tooth. In rare cases, patients may experience complications after the procedure, but your dental team will be available to address any issues that arise. To maintain the health of your treated tooth, continue practicing good oral hygiene.

  • The cost of a root canal can vary depending on factors such as the tooth's condition and its location. However, root canal therapy is typically much more affordable than extracting the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant or bridge.
